From Academia to Agency: The Value of a Marketing Internship

Group discussion around a table.

When I discovered strategic communications, I was immediately drawn to it as the perfect intersection of my passion for storytelling, pop culture and media. I realized it offered a unique opportunity to leverage trends, figures and social media to craft messages that resonate with others. This sparked my ambition to gain real-world experience and truly understand how strategic communications works. As a result, I applied for Anglin’s fall internship and after a series of interviews, I was offered the position.

Starting as an intern at Anglin, I quickly learned that adjustments were necessary to succeed. The days of sleeping in and staying up late were behind me and consistency in my daily routine became essential. I now structure my days to balance work, school and other personal commitments. Additionally, staying up-to-date on industry trends became more than a personal interest; it’s now a key part of my role.

As I look back at everything I’ve been able to experience through Anglin, I find myself feeling not only reminiscent but rewarded. Coming in, I had a few things  in mind I wanted to experience and learn from others, and I am happy to say I have been able to check those things off my list.

Content coordination

The first takeaway from my time at Anglin is that while content is king, coordination is what makes it effective. I’ve learned how to ensure that content, whether it be for social media, blogs or op-eds, aligns with an organization’s overall strategy and communicates the right message to the right audience. I have gained the ability to strategically organize and manage content calendars with an effective posting schedule, allowing for prompt engagement and awareness from viewers.

Influencer marketing

Coming into this opportunity, I knew I wanted to gain experience in influencer marketing as it is not only an interest of mine, but something I feel is growing in the strategic communications landscape. Through an influencer campaign for Southwestern Oklahoma State University, in which I was able to research, engage and coordinate with local influencers, I was able to discover ways they can effectively promote projects to their wide variety of audiences, and what it takes to manage that relationship.

Project management

Being involved in coordinating project timelines, tracking progress and communicating with team members to ensure smooth execution, I have gained valuable project management skills. Working closely with experienced marketers and PR professionals has allowed me to learn how to balance client expectations with deliverables, and has deepened my understanding of the complexities of managing numerous projects.

Looking back, I can confidently say that this experience has been transformative. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside bright and passionate minds, hone my skills and gain exposure to a variety of projects. Anglin’s collaborative culture, commitment to professional development and emphasis on real-world experience have made it an ideal place to grow.

If you’re passionate about strategic communications, marketing and/or public relations and want experience in a dynamic and supportive environment, I encourage you to explore opportunities with Anglin. Click here for more information on available positions and how you can join the team.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow and be a part of something truly special at Anglin. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next!
